Worried and confused

Slightly confused by these tests. Ive read that these tests give you your result based on what you were 12 weeks ago. So if you take a test at 12 weeks, or 84 days since you had the exposure, how is this giving an accurate reading? Am i missing something. I tested 100 days after unprotected encounter, this was negative. Does this mean its a false result if it was giving me my result on what i was 12 weeks ago? Please help asap
