Were they false negatives?

Hi, 5 weeks ago I had unprotected sex with my partner it was for the first time having unprotected sex but before this unprotected sex I bought two biosure HIV self-tests. Both of us (me and my partner) tested negative for HIV but now I am experiencing oral thrush, oral ulcer, swollen lymph nodes, fungal infection and flu-like symptoms. I want to know what may be the cause of this because both of us were negative before we slept together.

Hi Maina10, So sorry for not getting back to you sooner. There could be a number of explanations for the symptoms you have described - they are not synonymous with HIV only. If you and your partner both tested negative previously (outside of the 12 week window period) and neither of you has been exposed to HIV any other way then it suggests that your symptoms are unrelated to HIV. I very much doubt that both of your results were false negatives if you both tested outside of the window period. If you are worried that you may have been at risk from the unprotected sexual exposure, I would recommend that you test to be sure but if your result was negative previously, I would expect this result to also be negative. Kindest regards, Becky
