Talking about home testing for HIV

We had sex 8.5 weeks ago

We had sex 8.5 weeks ago – did use a condom but only after a couple of minutes without putting it on.

I had a mild cold after 4 weeks. And I think a couple of mild headaches. I then had an usual odourless discharge at 7.5 weeks for a couple of days with severe itching. This then disappeared after a couple of days.

I also had a couple of dizzy spells and foggy head around week 7 which I put down to Hayfever symptoms and tiredness which I again put down to Hayfever/Hayfever tablets.

I have since been feeling extremely anxious, nauseous and have lost my appetite. I cannot stop thinking that I may have contracted HIV from that exposure.

He suggests he has no infection of any sort but I do not trust this as he seems quite aloof about it and not worried about me having any symptoms.

I have sent off a home test kit for chlamydia and gonnhorea and did the BioSure test yesterday at 8 wks 3 days.

The biosure result came back negative. I am now panicking that there may have been a problem with the test as I struggled to get enough blood from the lancet and had to spend 5-10 minutes getting enough in the test. Would this have affected the results?? The control line appeared after just a few minutes.

I am sick with worry having panic attacks and cannot stop thinking of the worst. Please help me.

Hi Alldust, the reason the BioSURE HIV self test has a control line is so that the end user knows their result is valid. The negative line can only appear if sufficient blood has been used and the test has run correctly. This negative result is very encouraging however please re-test at 12 weeks to confirm this negative result as a small (tiny) percentage of people seroconvert late. I hope this helps but please don't hesitate to contact me further. Kindest regards Francesca Bard, BioSure (UK) Ltd
