Talking about home testing for HIV

not a false negative?

Last year I slept with three different people. We didn’t use condoms. – I won’t be making the same mistake in the future.

The first contact was only oral sex . I wasn’t particularly worried but a few weeks later I developed a dry cough and other symptoms. I went to the doctor and it cleared up with a course of antibiotics. But recently I read how flu symptoms are an early sign of HIV, so I start panicking and ordered a BioSure test.

There’s no reason to believe any of the people I had contact with have HIV, but because I’m unsure of their status I started to worry.

I took a BioSure test today. This is 6 months after my last sexual encounter with anyone. It was very easy and at the end of the 15 minutes there was a bold control line (so the test definitely worked!) and no second line whatsoever. It was like a picture perfect test – other than the control line the rest of the strip was perfectly blank, not even a hint of a second line.

I’m still a bit worried, so want to ask :-  Should I order another test to be certain?

Hi Anon54321, Your negative result using the BioSURE test 6 months post exposure is conclusive. The majority of false negative results occur when users are testing inside of the window period and you are clearly outside of the window period so this is not a worry. As you say your control line was very strong and visible, your test has definitely worked so there is also nothing to worry about regarding this. If I was in your position I would take my negative result as conclusive and would see no point in retesting unless it would help to put your mind at rest but given the time frame of your exposure and time of testing I would say this is unnecessary. I hope this information helps, if you have any other questions please feel free to leave them below. Kindest regards Becky
