HIV Test On 2 Year Old At 59 Days

Hi, I have carried out a Biosure test at 59 days on my two year old after he met my mother who is HIV positive. The test returned negative and I plan to carry out another at 12 weeks. I allowed my mum to meet my son for the first time on November 28 2020 for the first time as she was in a sober state. I let her watch my son in my car whilst I nipped in to a shop for 15mins max to grab us all a sandwich and now my mind has been worried ever since.

Thank you for your response, I appreciate this is a late response... please can you advise why the test isn't safe on children under 16 years old and if the results will have a potential to be inaccurate? Thank you again for your time and advice.

Hi AEB, Although the test is completely safe to use, we strongly recommend that only those aged 16 and above use this test. Sorry to hear about your worries, it is great that you are conscientious about transmission and testing but I also don't think it's healthy for you to worry about every possible exposure. HIV is transmitted through sexual fluids and blood most commonly. You cannot contract HIV from kissing, hugging or drinking from the same glass as an infected person etc. I think it would be very hard for someone to discreetly infect someone, particularly a child. Have you tried to talk to anyone about your worries and fears related to HIV transmission? Also, do you know if your mother is on treatment for HIV? If she is on effective treatment, although she is HIV positive, she cannot pass on the virus. This may be something to look into if your mother is not yet on treatment. I hope this information helps and I hope I haven't been too abrupt, I understand your worries and wish you the best. If you have any other questions or ever need to talk, give us a message! All the best, Becky
