blood sample valid?

I am concerned about the reliability of my negative test result. The test says to use blood from the finger prick but I was unable to bring myself to prick my finger so I used blood taken from a cut/scab on my face. The test run as normal and I quickly saw the control line appear. After 15 minutes there was only one line still, providing a negative result. My concern is that I’m worried my blood sample wasn’t valid because it didn’t come from my finger. Yet the test run and the control line appeared, so is it safe for me to rely on my result as being accurate and reliable? I’m assuming that all blood, regardless of where it comes from in the body will contain hiv antibodies if they are there. Or should I try to take another test?

Hi Becky I am sorry that I haven't managed to remove your anxiety. As I said previously the blood from an open wound, as long as it was red and not clear when it is collected, is the same wherever the open wound on your body is. We supply the lancet, which is almost painless, so that you can easily create the right sized drop of blood that is required for the test. The test only requires a very tiny amount of blood but it does require that the test device fills with blood to provide the optimum performance. The control line will only appear if you have applied sufficient blood and the correct buffer to the test device. The fact that you have a control line indicates that your test result is valid. I hope that this answers your question. Kind regards Gary

The blood i used for the test was red in colour. It was only a very small dot of blood from the old tiny cut I had so not a large sample. I was worried it would not be enough blood to do the test but the control line appeared and the blood spread up through the test device. The blood was maybe paler more watery red but it was still red and it was pale red/pink when the buffer solution moved it up the test device. I just want reassurance that my test was still valid despite me not using blood from a finger prick. I feel concerned that I might not have got a reliable result because the blood I used was red in colour but not very deep in colour. It was more watery and pale. I hope this still means it's a valid negative result.

Hi Anxious Becky I'm sorry if I didn't make this clear. The test is validated for use with capillary whole blood. Any open wound no matter where this comes from in the skin will be pretty much the same. So as long as the blood was coloured and not clear then the place that you took for the sample will NOT affect the result. Blood is the same wherever you take it from. I hope that this answers your question completely. Kind regards Gary

How can I be sure it's valid from this blood sample? Will any blood no matter where it's from show antibodies if there are any? I'm worried that maybe I need to take another test just to be sure. How can I be sure that the blood sample was ok to use and that my negative result is accurate and reliable?

Hi Anxious Becky Thanks for getting in touch. Admittedly a slightly unusual way of collecting your sample and one that I wouldn't recommend as a standard means of performing the test, it is none the less valid and you can rely on your negative result. I must say that the lancet probably would have hurt less. It is a tiny blade and makes a tiny cut, which whilst not entirely painless is only a small scratch, and you never actually see the blade as it retracts immediately that it has made the small cut. I hope that answers your question. Kind regards Gary Carpenter BioSure (UK) Limited
