HIV transmission via open wound?

I’ve been reading on google that HIV transmission through an open wound is quite rare. Can you catch HIV from blood splatter if you have cuts on your hands? My partner was involved in an accident at work and I’ve been worrying that he and I may have HIV. I tested on 84 days from the accident and tested negative. We however continued to have unprotected sex for the next 3 weeks. I am a very anxious person so I started worrying that he may have caught HIV and passed it on to me. We were both HIV negative before the accident. Your expertise would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi Anxious 2.0, If your partner was to have contracted HIV from the workplace accident and you tested 84 days after that exposure then your negative result is accurate. I hope this helps to put your mind at rest. Kindest regards, Becky

I also want to mention that only I did a test at 84 days following my partners accident. So can I still trust that result even though only I tested?

Thank you so much for the reply. We aren’t aware of his colleagues status hence why it’s been a stressful time. But thank you for putting my mind at ease. I am so grateful to have this platform to ask questions as I am a bit embarrassed and scared to ask my doctor these questions in person. I feel more at peace now knowing my status. Thank you again!

Hi Anxious 2.0, Sorry to hear that your partner was involved in an accident at work. Do you know whether the other person(s) involved in the accident were HIV positive? It is common for people to assume that if they come into contact with blood that the blood is contaminated or contains HIV infection. However, transmission is very unlikely to occur during an exposure, similar to what your partner had experienced. Regardless, your negative results at 84 days from the workplace accident are accurate and can be considered as conclusive - meaning that neither you or your partner have antibodies to HIV (therefore suggesting that no transmission occurred) and there is no need to retest. I hope this helps to put your mind at rest. If you have any other questions, please feel free to leave them below. Kindest regards, becky
