Am I in the clear?

Hello,
Just looking for a bit of reassurance as I’m a nervous wreck. . I’ve had sex with people in the past that has been unprotected. (Over 7 months ago)

I’m now in a new relationship of 5months. My partner had been tested at an NHS clinic before and was clear. I’ve taken two biosure tests, one at 18weeks and one at 20 weeks. Am I in the clear too?

My only concern is that my partner may have been tested to early for the antibodies to be detected by the clinic, but if he was positive I assume I would have been infected by now? We have had unprotected sex for around 18weeks. So does my clear test mean that the both of us are okay?

Many Thanks

Hi H, Our test has a window period of 12 weeks - so the tests that you have taken at 18 weeks and 20 weeks are conclusive. The tests performed at clinics usually test for antibodies and antigens so they have a shorter window period. So yes, it is possible that his result would have been picked up sooner. Unprotected sex with a new partner of an unknown status is risky. So please ensure that if you are engaging in sexual activities with your partner that you practice safe sex as although HIV diagnosis is now not as life threatening, there is not a cure and it is always better to be safe. Kindest regards, Becky, BioSURE UK LTD
