Blood Transfusions - “we need a straightforward referral path”
Please can the process for organising blood transfusions be improved? My dad has terminal cancer & requires blood transfusions every couple of months. His GP ensures that he has a blood test every couple of weeks to check his blood count & when the level drops to the required level for transfusion, the GP tries to organise for this to happen…….To date, this usually involves the GP spending a crazy amount of time on the phone to various departments in the hospital trying to organise his admission….we are usually then are sent via A&E before finally being admitted to a ward. There are always delays in the hospital before the blood transfusions commence & usually a minimum one night stay in hospital too. Why is there not a straight forward referral pathway for patients needing regular transfusions??
