My friend was in her thirties when she was dying of cancer. During that time she said that no one asked her what she wanted. People asked her about her religious believes but she had no choices as everyone else made decisions for her. Her parents treated her like a child again and took over her care. I am glad to see that people have choices and feel it is the duty of the health professional to promote such care. Without empowering people in this way they have lost everything. Doctors and nurses need to open up these discussions and sometimes act as the advocate and lessen the emotional burden of the person dying and their families. My friend would not have felt so alone as she did if her nurse had supported her. She was not in this area so I hope that the care I would receive here would mean my services provided me a choice and the human right to be an individual.
