Why the 0844 surgery numbers?
My medical centre in Harlow changed its telephone number from a local one to an 0844 576 number. My doctor says the surgery makes no money out of this number yet VirginMedia charges 30p per minute for these numbers, and they are not part of any inclusive call package. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m prepared to pay 30p to book an appointment, but having beeen left on hold for 5 minutes before I hung up I was concerned that the elderly and infirm could be running up high telephone bills when they contact this surgery. If the surgery makes nothing from the telephone number, why change from a local number that people can dial for nothing if they have an inclusive telephone package, or at a local call rate?
