I took 1 Truvada pill a day after exposure

Hi .I took 1 Truvada pill a day after exposure and never took them because the person I had unprotected vaginal sex with tested negative. I later heard the result may be false if she had sex within 3 months with an infected person . How many days must I wait to get a conclusive result as the 84 days/12week may be disturbed by the pill. ///// note from PEBL : “Truvada” is a kind of Pre Exposure Prophylactic medicine, also known as PrEP. More information about PrEP.

Hi Rozzy, If your friend may have been exposed to HIV then it was wise of them to begin a course of PEP following their exposure. Testing at 2 weeks using a self test is likely to give a false result due to the window period and rate of antibody production. Given that your friend was unsure of their sexual partner's status and exposure, I would recommend that they visit a GUM or sexual health clinic and request a 4th generation HIV test to be done just to be sure. I hope this helps. Kind regards, Becky

Hi Helpp, You must wait at least 12 weeks after taking PrEP before using our test for a conclusive result - which is the same window period as time since exposure (84 days). If you have had unprotected sex with someone that you believe may be HIV positive, it may be recommended that you get a 4th generation test done as soon as possible. You can of course wait the 12 weeks to use our test but the sooner you know your status, the better. I hope this information helps, if you have any other questions please feel free to leave them below. Kindest regards, Becky
